Leather and Suede Cleaning Process

Suedes and leathers are unpredictable when compared to fabrics. The skins used to make these garments go through about 32 steps at the tannery before they are even made into a garment. Suedes and leathers are natural skins made from various portions of the animal and often a garment is constructed from several animals. The skins will never be completely uniform, that is part of their desirability. Variance in texture and color may be accentuated after the leather and suede cleaning process. Scars and imperfections are natural characteristics to that animal's life. Leather tanners often use fillers to mask scars and imperfections in the skins. Leather and suede cleaning may remove the fillers and cause defects to appear.

Skins taken from certain parts of an animal are naturally wrinkled. During tanning, they may have been stretched to give the leather a smooth appearance. Cleaning may relax the leather, restoring it back to its natural, more wrinkled appearance. Some shrinkage may occur during the leather and suede cleaning process, but the leather will stretch with wear. Some adhesives used to glue seams and hems may not withstand cleaning. Classic Drycleaners will re-glue those areas, however they may be permanently darkened.

Exposure to light and atmospheric gases can cause leather to oxidize and fade. Suede and leather cleaning may make this more noticeable and cannot always be corrected, however we can make every attempt with your consent. Over time, and during the suede and leather cleaning process, your leather may lose some of its oils used in the tanning process to keep the skin supple. We use special paraffin oils to restore suppleness, however different textures of leather absorb these oils differently. This may cause the skin to darken and become softer. This is a natural phenomenon that is beyond our control.

Please understand that your coat will come back clean, freshened, and softened-but it many not necessarily look like id did when it was new. Any differences will most likely be slight.

Extremely Soiled Garments

When a garment is extremely soiled it is often not only filthy, but on its way to permanent damage. The layers and layers of dirt break down the skin and inhibit its ability to stay soft and last long. About 50% of extremely soiled garments can be restored. If you are in doubt, feel free to bring your garment in & let our suede and leather expert evaluate the garment.
